  4. The purpose of FLEXTEXT Print Utility is to print reports on a workstation 
  5. running OS/2 2.0. 
  6.  
  7. This program prints multiple pages per sheet of paper in portrait or landscape 
  8. mode.  Any available font, type, and point size may be selected depending on 
  9. the input file's requirements. 
  10.  
  11. Many IBM mainframe generated reports contain ANSI control characters ("FBA" 
  12. files).  These reports can be printed or exported to a "print file" for import 
  13. into a word processing document. 
  14.  
  15. TAB characters are expanded depending on information supplied in the 
  16. preferences section. 
  17.  
  18. Clipboard data can be browsed and optionally printed. 
  19.  
  20. Both sides of the paper can be used even if you are using a none duplex 
  21. printer.  Simulated duplex processing provides a "two pass" capability that 
  22. prints the front, then the back sides of a report. 
  23.  
  24. A booklet style page configuration is available in the 2-up, landscape mode.

  74. The OPEN menu contains options to retrieve data from a file or the clipboard. 
  75. The following options appear under the OPEN menu:

  79. CLIPBOARD      Retrieves data currently held in the clipboard.

  84. You can open a file that exists on any drive or in any directory by using the 
  85. FILE option. To open a file, do the following:

  87. o Select the Open menu and choose the File selection.

  89. A dialog box appears, showing you a list of files in the current directory.

  94. The CLIPBOARD option imports data into the browse window which can be 
  95. subsequently printed.

  97. A snapshot of clipboard text is taken when CLIPBOARD is selected.  If changes 
  98. are made to the data in the clipboard once the browse window is displayed, the 
  99. modifications will not take affect in FlexText until the CLIPBOARD option is 
  100. re-selected.

  102. FlexText only supports text-based data.  Other data types found in the 
  103. clipboard will be ignored.

  108. EXPORT will save a file following TAB expansion and ANSI control character 
  109. translation.  The resulting file is suitable for import into word processors or

  347. select a print queue.

  371.  The FONT dialog allows you to select font types, point size, and styles.  All 
  372. available scalable fonts (ATM) are listed. Be careful in selecting a large 
  373. point size since it can result in truncated data.

  375.  Initially, the program will default to "Courier" which provides mono-spaced 
  376. characters.  Selection of other variable-spaced fonts may affect column 
  377. alignment. 
  378.  
  379.  Note that many options are provided that may not be appropriate for this type 
  380. of report application (i.e., strike out, outline, etc.).  These options have 
  381. been provided only to achieve OS/2 application standardization.

  386.  The PRINT REPORT dialog controls page configurations, and fonts. 
  387.  
  388.  Pressing JOB PROPERTIES displays another window that, among other options, 
  389. specifies page orientation.  By switching from "portrait" to "landscape", 
  390. different page configurations are displayed on the original "PRINT REPORT" 
  391. window allowing multiple pages to be printed side by side, or top and bottom. 
  392. Text files with record lengths of 80 characters or less generally print best 
  393. side by side, while reports of up to 133 characters are better printed top and 
  394. bottom. 
  395.  
  396.  The first time the PRINT REPORT is displayed, a reminder window is 
  397. automatically created that describes other page configurations available as 
  398. explained in the previous paragraph.  If you no longer wish the reminder window 
  399. to be displayed, it can be disabled in the PREFERENCES dialog found under the 
  400. OPTIONS menu selection. 
  401.  
  402.  Point size automatically changes when different page configurations are 
  403. selected.  The point size you select in the SELECT FONT window is associated 
  404. with the current page configuration and will be saved.  This process minimizes 
  405. the need to display the font selection screen repetitively.  Whenever you enter 
  406. the SELECT FONT window, the program highlights a default point size appropriate 
  407. for the current page configuration. 
  408.  
  409.  SIMULATED DUPLEX provides the ability to print on both sides of the paper with 
  410. a non-duplex printer.  The program will print the front side of the document, 
  411. then pause, allowing you to re-insert the stack in the printer to complete the 
  412. back sides. 
  413.  
  414.  BOOKLET STYLE arranges the pages in book-style order. Note that the booklet 
  415. option is only available in 2-up landscape page configuration.

  420.  The PRINT RANGE provides selection of pages to print. Note that the starting 
  421. page must be less than or equal to the last page.

  423.  Pressing the Reset pushbutton will set the starting page at 1 and the last 
  424. page at the end of the report.

  427. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Margins ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  428.  
  429.  The MARGINS window permits adjustment of page borders. Adjustments are made in 
  430. 1/10 inch increments moving toward the center of the page.  Margin settings are 
  431. stored between sessions and are associated with the highlighted print queue 
  432. from the previous dialog.

  435. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Continue Duplex ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  436.  
  437.  The CONTINUE DUPLEX PRINTING dialog is presented when FlexText has completed 
  438. writing the front sides of the simulated duplex document to the spooler.  After 
  439. allowing the printer to complete the first-pass printing, push the Continue 
  440. button to trigger back-side printing. 
  441.  
  442.  Reverse back-side printing eliminates the need to re-shuffle pages on printers 
  443. that need the paper stack face down in the paper tray.  Some experimentation 
  444. may be necessary to determine how the pages should face to utilize the 
  445. simulated duplex function.

  449.  
  450. Select a print queue from the displayed list, then press OK. 
  451.  
  452. The selected printer Queue will remain in effect unil explicity changed.  The 
  453. first time the program is executed, the system default queue will be used. 
  454.  
  455. Pressing the MARGINS pushbutton displays a window that accepts margin 
  456. adjustments.

  460.  
  461. The EXPORT FILE option generates an ASCII file after expanding Tabs and if 
  462. necessary, removing ANSI control characters from the data. 
  463.  
  464. A top of page ANSI control character ("1") may be translated to a ascii hex"0C" 
  465. depending on preference settings. Other ANSI control characters (i.e., "0", 
  466. "-") result in the insertion of blank line(s).  Note that ANSI control 
  467. character "+" is simply removed with no change to the incoming data. 
  468.  
  469. Once generated, the resulting ascii report file can be imported into most word 
  470. processors.

  473. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Preferences ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  474.  
  475.  The PREFERENCES option allows the user to configure processing defaults.  The 
  476. changes are maintained in an initialization file (FLXTXT.INI) that is loaded at 
  477. program startup. 
  478.  
  479.  Configurable options are as follows: 
  480.  
  481. o "Animate program startup" controls the FlexText title animation when starting 
  482.   FlexText.  The animation takes a couple of seconds and may be bypassed if 
  483.   desired. 
  484.  
  485. o "Minimize file viewer automatically" will cause the window that displays the 
  486.   report to be immediately minimized when a file is opened. 
  487.  
  488. o "Display landscape reminder info box" causes an additional window to be 
  489.   displayed when "Print" is selected from the menu.  The box reminds the user 
  490.   of additional page configurations available if the user enters "Job 
  491.   Properties" and selects landscape orientation.  The information box is 
  492.   displayed only once during program execution. 
  493.  
  494. o "Use x'0c' for page break in saved print files" will insert the common page 
  495.   break character whenever a new page is anticipated.  Note that this type of 
  496.   page break only occurs in files with ANSI control characters (FBA files). 
  497.  
  498. o "Expand TAB characters to ?? spaces" will convert any x'09' characters to the 
  499.   specified number of spaces.  Use the arrows on the right side of the numeric 
  500.   field to scroll through the valid values. 
  501.  
  502. o The three radio buttons provide a way to suppress the file type window from 
  503.   displaying every time a file or clipboard is opened.  If your data typically 
  504.   contains ANSI control characters, select  "always apply ANSI CC translation". 
  505.   If you never use ANSI CC's, select "never apply ANSI CC translation".  These 
  506.   options will prevent the file type window from being displayed. 
  507.  
  508. Once your selections are made, press the SAVE button to apply the preferences 
  509. to this and subsequent sessions.  If the file viewer is currently open (or 
  510. minimized), the view is automatically recreated using the new options.  The 
  511. DEFAULT button will return the settings to the factory settings.  CANCEL will 
  512. drop all changes since the last time the preferences were saved.

  516.  
  517.  ANSI control characters are commonly found on mainframe reports.  Report 
  518. records are typically (but not necessarily) 133 bytes in length with the 
  519. carriage control characters in position 1 of each line.  The following is a 
  520. list of control characters with their corresponding effects: 
  521.  
  522. "1" - top of page (page break) 
  523. "0" - double space 
  524. "-"  - triple space 
  525. "+" - overtype 
  526. " " - single space
